What is biofilm, and why is it the real cause of water problems?
If the pool wall feels slippery, the water deteriorates quickly, and the problem keeps returning no matter how much you raise the chlorine dose, you are almost certainly dealing with biofilm.
What happens in the pipes?
Bacteria are defenceless in open water, so they build communities: clinging to surfaces, they create a slimy protective layer, and that is biofilm. Hot tub pipework is an ideal home for them: warm, dark and rich in nutrients. Biofilm can appear even in brand-new tubs, because water remains in the pipes after factory testing.
Why doesn't more chlorine help?
Traditional sanitisers cannot penetrate the protective layer of biofilm: they attack its surface but never reach the bacteria living inside. That is why, a few days after shocking the water, everything starts all over again, while your skin and eyes are already suffering from the raised chemical levels.
